A young couple asked the O’Brien & Keane architectural firm to design a family chapel. The inspiration was the Porziuncola Chapel, the church built by St. Francis of Assisi.
The exterior has the Porziuncola’s simplicity and proportions, but the interior is only about 700 sq. ft. It looks like a fine piece of jewelry.
In the center of the floor of the nave is amazing blue Azul Macahubas quartzite in a diamond-shaped book-matched pattern surrounded by Bianco Carrara marble. The floor of the sanctuary is a complex pattern of black, white, and yellow marble.
The altar rail is made of Bianco Carrara marble and bronze. All the furniture is Bianco Carrara. The altar is decorated with the crown of thorns, the three nails, and the spear in bronze. In front of the ambo is a scroll with an incised monogram with Alpha and Omega. Another scroll above holds the bookrest. The design of the tabernacle was inspired by the Tempietto of Bramante. The door is solid bronze.
